Solid State Lighting (SSL) refers to a type of lighting that utilises light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as sources of illumination rather than electrical filaments or gas. The term "Solid State" refers to the fact that light in an LED is emitted from a solid object - a block of semiconductor - rather than from a vacuum or gas tube, as is the case in traditional incandescent and fluorescent lamps. Unlike these traditional lighting systems however, SSL creates visible light with reduced heat generation or parasitic energy dissipation leading to greater efficiency and lower energy costs. In addition the solid state nature of LED technology provides for greater resistance to shock, vibration and wear thereby increasing its lifespan considerably to more than 5x that of traditional lamp units.
Ozone is a special form of oxygen. Normally, two atoms of oxygen form an oxygen molecule, but an ozone molecule consists of three oxygen atoms. The effects that ozone has on the biochemical course of reaction in the aquarium are based on its high oxidation power. Ozone is the strongest available oxidation agent, but is also environmentally friendly as it only consists of three atoms of oxygen and does not introduce any chemicals into the water.
Salifert Profi Test Kits for reef, marine and advanced freshwater aquarists are some of the most precise and accurate test kits on the market. Kits are available for all aspects of the aquarium's chemistry, covering organic and inorganic pollutants as well as valuable marine trace elements to allow for accurate dosing when additives are required. The kits feature bold colour changes and good colour comparison charts and offer quick and easy water testing. There are 16 kits in the range, and most are suitable for both freshwater and saltwater environments (unless otherwise stated).
